What is ECG (Electrocardiogram)

An electrocardiogram (ECG or EKG) means recording of electrical activity of the heart. Small electrical impulses are created in the heart by so called pacemaker cells. These impulses spread through the heart muscle and make it contract. ECG records these signals as they travel through the heart. To the trained specialists, ECG provides large amount of information about the structure and the function of the heart.

In most cases ECG is measured from the skin surface with ECG electrodes. These electrodes detect very small electrical changes on the skin that comes from the heart as it contracts.

ECG is widely used to detect various abnormalities in heart rhythm, size of the heart chambers or possible damage to the heart muscle or its nervous system.

What are Heart Rate Variability (HRV) and Autonomic Nervous System (ANS), and why they are so important for us?

Key to the whole discussion of fostering and maintaining good health is the interaction of mind and body. Especially the interaction between the mind and the all-important physical organ, the heart. As you probably know, your body reacts to nearly everything happening around you through your emotions, observations, thoughts and activity. Your brain guides the body by regulating heart and other organs through the autonomic nervous system (ANS). There are two different branches in the autonomic nervous system, Sympathetic Nervous System (SNS) and Parasympathetic Nervous System (PSNS), which work contrarily. The sympathetic nervous system can be described as the gas pedal of the human body, and contrarily, the parasympathetic nervous system is the break that is activated during relaxation and regeneration. A properly functioning PSNS is essential for your health as a strong PSNS facilitates regeneration and has anti-inflammatory effects.

You probably are wondering how it is then possible to measure the functioning of PSNS and keep track of your own health and well-being? To fully understand this, it is also important to understand the term and concept of Heart Rate Variability. Many times we tend to assume that the interval between two heartbeats is the same, regardless of how fast or slow the heart is beating. However, a fact is that the time interval between heartbeats is all but regular, but that does not mean we are suffering from arrhythmia or other heart problems. The physiological variation of heart rate, controlled by autonomic nervous system, is called Heart Rate Variability (also commonly known as HRV). As a matter of fact this irregularity of cardiac activity, in other words Heart Rate Variability, is normal and very healthy. The more you have variation in your heartbeats, the stronger your inner brake (the parasympathetic nervous system) is.

Measuring heart rate variation reveals wide range of information about your body and health even while other physiological parameters, like blood pressure, are still in their normal or accepted ranges. HRV has been scientifically proved to be one of the best measures to test the ANS function. One of the most sensitive and efficient tests to do this is the one minute deep breathing test, where a person is breathing in and out deeply. When your PSNS (inner brake) is working normally, the heart rate should vary during the test in the following way: increasing heart rate during inhale and decreasing heart rate during exhale. The faster your heart rate drops during exhale, the better your inner brake is working, which of course increases your ability to manage your stress, and your immunity.

The great fact is that despite your starting condition it is possible to improve the functioning of your ANS through different kinds of training methods, like sports or relaxation training (biofeedback training), which again increases your performance and overall well-being in the long-run. Of course in some cases lifestyle changes are needed since things like sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and drinking too much alcohol will considerably weaken your PSNS. Developing a strong PSNS is also directly linked to social and emotional development: positive feelings, the ability to express emotions, healthy humor and smiling, and the ability to form and maintain healthy relationships are immensely important for the strengthening of the PSNS.

Bittium Faros FAQ

  • How I can review recorded cardiac events?

    • Cardiac events recorded by Bittium Faros can be reviewed with software which needs to be purchased separately. To get a quotation and more information, please contact us at medical.support(a)bittium.com
  • How do I know that the battery of the device is fully charged?

    • When the battery is fully charged, the blue LED lights stays on continuously when the device is connected to a computer with micro-USB cable. Please remember to fully charge your Bittium Faros devices before the first use.
  • In my last measurement the time and date of the measurement were wrong. Why is that? How can I fix this problem?

    • When the sensor is delivered, the device clock is synchronized to the Finnish time. This is why the clock needs to be synchronized before the first use. Also, if the battery of the device has ran out, the clock of the device may change to default time. This is why we recommend you to synchronize the clock of the device every time you connect the device with your PC (either when recharging or when downloading data from the sensor).
  • Do I need software for downloading measurement data from the sensor?

    • No, there is no need for software in this case. Once you connect the device to PC via USB, you can browse to the hard drive of the device (named ?FAROS_DATA´) and copy/cut and paste the needed files to your computer. If you wish, you can also open the measurement files directly with software from the device´s memory. Alternatively you can use Bittium Faros Manager to save the measurement files.
  • How can I reset my Bittium Faros device?

    • Start pressing the push button. Press and hold the button until all of the LED lights blink once (approximately 10 seconds).
  • How can I change the measurement modes of the device?

    • Go to the device hard drive Faros_Data. From this hard drive you can find the FarosManager.exe with which you are able to change the measurement settings. Please see chapter 4 of the Bittium Faros Manual for further information on how to use Bittium Faros Manager.
  • Which data format should I choose for my measurement, SDF (Suunto Data Format) or EDF (European Data Format)?

    • If you wish to measure ECG or make event markers to the measurement data, you always need to use EDF as saved data format. If you are interested in measuring only R-R intervals and physical activity, you can choose between EDF and SDF. If you wish to save the RR and acceleration data to a text file format, then SDF is more appropriate. Both of these data formats are rather global, which is why there are a variety of software that can open these files. SDF is not supported from Bittium Faros 3.2.x onwards.
  • Firmware update is not working properly, or device is not responsive after failed firmware update?

    • If firmware update process is finished ok but firmware is not upgraded, try again using another USB port on your computer. Please follow instructions found from Bittium Faros Manual, section 7.1.2.
  • What might be the reason for bad quality measurement data?

    • If you are using disposable electrodes, the first thing to do is to check whether the electrodes are dry or not. The quality of the recorded data will suffer with dry electrodes. Once you open the bag of electrodes remember to close it tightly and firmly to avoid drying of the electrodes.

      If the two reasons presented above have not caused the problem, you can try to reset the device. If resetting the device does not help, please contact medical.support@bittium.com for assistance.

  • What is the suitable sampling frequency when measuring ECG?

    • This depends significantly on the purpose of use for the device. For most measurements and analysis, 250Hz or 125Hz is a suitable sampling frequency. If more accurate ECG data is needed for making ECG or HRV analysis and diagnosis it is recommended to use sampling rate that is 500Hz or higher.
  • My Bittium Faros Sensor does not start, what might cause this problem?

    • It is important to remember that Bittium Faros Sensor uses the energy of the battery also when it is on standby mode (?power off´ mode). For example, the device´s inner clock uses the battery also when it is turned off to keep up with the time. This is why we recommend you to recharge the device before every measurement, or at least when the device has been on standby mode for several days.
  • Why does Windows show a message indicating that device disk has errors and it should be scanned?

    • Disk error may happen when user does not disconnect the device safely from computer. Please follow instructions found from Bittium Faros Manual, section 2.5.2.
  • For how long time Bittium Faros sensor is designed for operation?

    • Device life time is much depending on device use. Estimated device life time is 5 years. For cable sets recommendation is to change to new ones if there are seen damages on cables or on connectors.
