Bittium enables hybrid networking, connecting the tactical edge to strategic command

Bittium Corporation press release on 10 June 2026, at 11.00 am (CEST +1)

Bittium's approach to hybrid networking bridges military tactical communications with secure connectivity across all network domains, giving defence forces a continuous and unbroken communications chain at every level of operation.

Bittium today presents its vision for hybrid networking, an approach that unites its tactical communications systems with secure, software defined wide-area networking connectivity to give defence forces, government agencies and critical infrastructure operators a complete and unbroken communications chain, from the front line to the command centre.

Modern operations depend on a continuous flow of accurate information. A field commander needs to know what is happening at the tactical edge. A strategic headquarters needs that same picture in as close to real time as possible. Today, these two worlds often rely on separate, disconnected systems, creating gaps in situational awareness that can have serious consequences. Bittium's hybrid networking approach closes those gaps.

At the tactical edge, where conditions are demanding and interference is common, Bittium's MANET-based radio networks provide resilient, self-organising connectivity that keeps units communicating even when infrastructure is damaged or unavailable. As information moves up the chain, the same network integrates seamlessly with 4G and 5G broadband, SATCOM, and other communications technologies. The result is a single, coherent system that carries voice and data reliably from the most remote unit to the most senior decision-maker.

Central to this capability is the Bittium FUSOR™ software router, which acts as the bridge between tactical and commercial network domains. Using the same routing logic as Bittium's tactical radios, it automatically selects the best available data path as conditions change, ensuring communications remain uninterrupted whether a unit is operating in a degraded environment or moving between network coverage areas. This means soldiers can move across domains and geographies without losing their connection or their situational picture. In addition to routing capabilities FUSOR brings quantum safe encryption-layers for untrusted networks and centralized end-user device management. This brings iron clad security for communication. When software security is not enough, security can be extended to hardware level with Bittium Tough Mobile™ product family which is certified up to NATO Restricted level.

The strategic value is straightforward. Defence forces have long operated with tactical networks that are capable but limited in range, and with broader communications systems that lack the security and resilience needed at the front. Hybrid networking brings these together in a way that neither compromises security nor sacrifices operational reach. A general at headquarters can maintain an accurate and timely picture of what is happening in the field. A unit operating at distance can receive orders and share information without switching systems or losing protection.

Software defined hybrid networking also supports interoperability, an increasingly important requirement as defence forces operate alongside allied units and civilian authorities. Bittium's approach allows secure data exchange across previously separate systems, making joint operations simpler to coordinate without exposing sensitive communications.

“Hybrid networking is the next step in how we think about military communications. Our customers have always needed systems that hold up under the most difficult conditions. Now they also need those systems to reach further and work alongside the broader infrastructure that modern operations depend on. That is exactly what this brings,” says Tommi Kangas, Senior Vice President, Bittium Defence & Security.
