ELEKTROBIT INTEGRATES MOBILE DATA SERVICES INTO ITS NAVIGATION SOFTWARE EB STREET DIRECTOR

EB street director paves the road to connected services

Erlangen, May 10, 2011 - EB (Elektrobit), a leading company of cutting-edge embedded technology solutions for automotive and wireless industries, now offers carmakers and suppliers the option to integrate connected services, like Aloqa, in its EB street director navigation software. With Aloqa, the navigation will benefit from integrated services of other content providers like Wikipedia and Qype. EB street director supports connected services as of version 7.0 and will be available at the beginning of the third quarter of 2011.

EB street director is an industry-leading navigation software solution that is used in the automotive and consumer market in all vehicle segments, from low-end to high-end. These include factory-installed in-vehicle navigation systems, portable navigation units (PNDs), aftermarket and mobile Internet devices (MIDs). The version 7.0 is the most comprehensive release ever, and thanks to the modular architecture of EB street director, carmakers and suppliers can combine navigation with their own applications and services to address the most demanding needs of consumers. EB has now integrated an interface for connected services into the core of the software development kit (SDK).

"EB street director's software development kit (SDK) provides a complete set of development and configuration tools. The latest platform is ideally suited for development of connected devices, and our automotive customers have more choice in how they bring their products to market and more quickly meet the demand for connected, navigation and multimedia rich applications.  The services interface we have integrated in the core SDK, we provide free of charge in the new EB street director version 7.0," said Alexander Asner, Product Line Manager for EB street director. "Mobile users can use connected services to explore location-based services or to show their route with augmented navigation. Rather than creating new services especially for the automotive world, we are using community driven content from existing internet platforms to avoid high subscription fees."

POI available online

Connected services are mobile data services that provide the user with selective information. With Aloqa, a popular app on many mobile phone platforms, consumers have access to a variety of content channels, and the advantage to the publishers of content is that they can easily create new content since the platform is extensible and updateable. By integrating the Aloqa client software EB now brings these services to the automotive world. Connected services are used in navigation devices to provide the users with information like traffic updates, gas prices, or events in the vicinity, in addition to route information. This information is shown in EB street director's navigation map as POIs (points of interest). They can also be stored on the unit and searched for later as destinations.

Online services can be accessed either over the user's phone (using Bluetooth wireless technology) or over the embedded phone in the car.

EB street director provides the ideal platform for creating compelling, connected experiences for in-vehicle consumption. EB offers a set of services for development purposes for free, part of the EB street director product, however, carmakers control the monetization model for the end-user.
