FUNCTIONAL SAFETY COMPETENCE TEAM SUPPORTS THE EFFICIENT DEVELOPMENT OF SAFETY-RELATED SOFTWARE
ISO 26262 defines new state-of-the art technology for safety-related software

Erlangen, January 25, 2011 - EB (Elektrobit), a leading developer of cutting-edge embedded technology solutions for automotive and wireless industries, supports companies in the development and integration of safety applications and functions for safety-relevant systems. The Functional Safety Competence Team at EB can manage safety mechanisms for AUTOSAR-compliant software, including the highest safety classification of ASIL Level D.

ISO 26262 is expected to be approved as an international standard in the second half of 2011. In the automobile industry the current valid IEC 61508 is often only regarded as suitable to a certain extent. For automobile manufacturers and suppliers the new standard means that compliance with the ISO standard will be obligatory for the development of safety-relevant electrical and electronic systems in vehicles.

For years EB has supported suppliers in the development of safety-relevant software, and is currently active in safety related customer projects, in which AUTOSAR software has to be developed in consideration of compliance with the future ISO 26262 standard. Using internally developed AUTOSAR-compatible extensions, EB enables the efficient integration of the software into ECUs up to the highest safety classification ASIL-D.

The development of safety-relevant and standards-compliant AUTOSAR software requires a deep understanding of ECU development down to the hardware interface - knowledge that EB has bundled in this new team. The Functional Safety Competence Team has a profound understanding of the automotive software development process and can offer full lifecycle support from requirements and design through coding and analysis to test and verification.

"Within EB, more than 100 developers have already been trained in how the requirements for functional safety can be met," says Florian Bogenberger, Functional Safety Manager at EB. "Potential problems and software development activities requiring special attention can only be identified at an early stage if the project team has a deep understanding of functional safety and its implications".

The future ISO 26262 also stipulates the role of a Functional Safety Manager. "EB therefore provides a responsible Functional Safety Manager for every safety related project it participates in", adds Bogenberger, referring to the procedure.
