Bittium exhibits its products and solutions for tactical communications at Eurosatory defense exhibition

Oulu, Finland, June 13, 2016 – Bittium exhibits its products and solutions for tactical communications at Eurosatory defense exhibition on June 13-17 in Paris, France. The products and solutions to be exhibited are software defined radio based Bittium Tactical Wireless IP Network™ (TAC WIN) system , Bittium Tactical LTE Access Point™ solution (Long-Term Evolution, 4G), Bittium Tough VoIP™ product family (Voice over Internet Protocol) and Bittium Tough Mobile™ LTE smartphone. These products and solutions are based on the latest software and device technologies and enable comprehensive broadband data transfer and IP calls across the battlefield. At the exhibition stand (Hall 6, D301) Bittium will demonstrate the field applicability of these data transfer and communication solutions, which are essential in the battlefield. Also, Bittium Tough Mobile will be demonstrated with third party PTT-applications (Push-to-Talk).

In addition to the demonstrations taking place at Bittium’s own stand, the Bittium TAC WIN system is part of two separate interoperability demonstrations of the ESSOR High Data Rate Waveform (HDRWF) developed in the ESSOR program (European Secure Software defined Radio). In the other demonstration, the Bittium TAC WIN system and the French company Thales’ Compact Vehicular Wideband SDR Software Defined Radio platform is interworking and embed the ESSOR HDRWF. This demonstration is hosted by DGA (Direction Générale de l’Armement) of French Ministry of Defence at their stand located in Hall 5a.  In another demonstration Bittium collaborates with the Italian company Leonardo, and the Bittium TAC WIN system is running the ESSOR HDRWF together with Leonardo Swave SDR tactical radio. The demonstration takes place at Leonardo’s exhibition stand D501 in the outdoor area. Both of the demonstrations are for showcasing the results of the committed cooperation in the ESSOR programme, and the applicability of the ESSOR HDRWF for international joint operations.

  • Bittium TAC WIN is a high-performance wireless network solution enabling quick and flexible construction of link, point-to-multipoint and MANET (Mobile Ad Hoc Network) connections.  The system offers broadband IP data transfer for mobile troops in all parts of the battlefield and also connects them to landline networks.
  • Bittium Tactical LTE Access Point is a solution providing LTE access to the Bittium TAC WIN network. With the solution different troops can benefit from cost-efficient and high-speed multimedia data and VoIP services by using commercial smartphones as well as special terminals intended for authority use.
  • Bittium Tough VoIP product family’s products enable tactical IP calls and broadband data transfer even in demanding conditions. Products are also easily integrated to existing IP infrastructure. The Bittium Tough VoIP product family was extended in April with Bittium Tough VoIP Service™ software product, which can be used to connect both fixed data network users and wireless tactical data network users to the same voice service network.
  • Bittium Tough Mobile is a secure and strong Android-based LTE smartphone combining the latest information security and commercial device technologies. Bittium Tough Mobile incorporates a hardware-based security platform implemented with special components, which enables the integration of both customers’ own and third party software security solutions. This dedicated hardware is essential for building layered mobile security solutions. In addition Bittium Tough Mobile’s features include for example a programmable Push-to-Talk button (PTT), glove-usable 5” full HD display, IP67 level water and dust protection and MIL-STD-810G level shock resistance.

The aim of the ESSOR program is to develop the European Software Defined Radio technology in order to improve the capabilities for cooperation in coalition operations. The first phase of the ESSOR program was successfully finalized in 2015. The program was established under the umbrella of the European Defense Agency (EDA)‎, sponsored by the governments of Finland, France, Italy, Poland, Spain and Sweden, and it was awarded by the Organisation Conjointe de Coopération en matière d’ARmement (OCCAR) to the dedicated joint venture Alliance for ESSOR (a4ESSOR S.A.S.) to be in charge of managing the industrial consortium. Besides Bittium, the other industrial parties in the first phase of the ESSOR program were Indra from Spain, Leonardo from Italy, Radmor from Poland, Saab from Sweden, and Thales from France. In addition to the European High Data Rate Waveform, the first phase of the program produced the definition for the European Software Defined Radio Architecture. The parties are currently in negotiations about the second phase of the program. The most important goal of the second phase is to achieve operational performance for the ESSOR system.
