Open/close section Water and dust protection

Follow the water and dust protection information carefully to prevent damage to Bittium Tough Mobile and to maintain the water resistant and dust-protected performance of the device.

  • Bittium Tough Mobile may be damaged if water or dust enters the device. Do not immerse Bittium Tough Mobile in water on purpose.
  • Bittium Tough Mobile is IP67 rated dust protected and water resistant meaning that the phone can survive accidental dips and up to 30 minute submersion at 1 meter depth in water. In order to maintain the water and dust resistance the battery cover, the USB connector cover and the headset cover must be properly closed.
  • Intentional underwater immersion of Bittium Tough Mobile should be avoided. Bittium Tough Mobile is not designed for purposeful underwater or shower usage. Purposeful use of the phone in these environments will result in a void of the warranty.
  • The battery cover, USB and headset jack covers may be loosened during normal use or may be broken or deformed if Bittium Tough Mobile is dropped or receives an impact. For IP67 rating ensure that all the covers are in good condition and are properly aligned and tightly closed.
  • Submerging Bittium Tough Mobile in water will degrade touch screen responsiveness and audio quality. To restore the touch screen responsiveness and normal audio quality dry all water off including the touch screen, earpiece and loudspeaker openings.
  • Do not expose Bittium Tough Mobile to water which is moving with force, such as water running from a tap, shower, hose, drips, sprays or splashes.
  • If Bittium Tough Mobile is exposed to salt water, rinse it softly with fresh water immediately and dry it thoroughly with a clean, soft cloth.
  • Dry your hands before opening Bittium Tough Mobile covers. Do not open the device's covers if the device is wet, in water or in very humid environment.
  • Be careful when opening or closing the battery cover to avoid damaging the rubber seal. Also, clean the battery cover and the rubber seal from all water debris before closing it.
  • The USB and headset ports must be completely dry before a cable can be connected.
Open/close section Shock resistance
  • Bittium Tough Mobile has been tested against the test method MIL-STD-810G 516.6 Shock Procedure IV (Transit Drop). It includes 26 drops (each corner 1 time) from 1.22 meters. This has been done to ensure that the device can be used in the field in demanding environments.
  • In addition to test methods defined by MIL-STD-810G, Bittium has also done guided free fall (1.5m to wooden surface) and random free fall (1m) tests.
  • Intentional dropping of Bittium Tough Mobile should be avoided. Cosmetic damage, device failure caused by liquid damages, or damage due to misuse, abuse, negligence, accident, modification or disassembly of any part of Bittium Tough Mobile are not covered by the product warranty offered by Bittium.

In addition, to avoid damage to the device, do not expose the device to sun lotion, mosquito repellent or other corroding substances.

FAQ

General

Open/close section How does Bittium Tough Mobile differ from a "normal" smartphone?

Bittium Tough Mobile differs from standard of-the-shelf smartphones in several ways.

Bittium Tough Mobile is available in three OS versions: one version is provided with the Google Mobile Services like Google Play and Google Maps, second is pure Android Open Source Project (AOSP) version without any Google Mobile Services, and third is a dual-boot device with two operating systems in the same device.

Bittium Tough Mobile incorporates a special security platform with features like tamper-detection to protect hardware from physical attacks, as well as an integrity check to ensure end-user security and privacy. Bittium Tough Mobile can be also remotely "wiped" if lost and mobile email can be secured by end-to-end PGP-encryption.

For the highest level of security, Bittium Tough Mobile can be complemented with its back-end system Bittium Secure Suite. Together with the Bittium Tough Mobile non-GMS variant they form Bittium Tough Mobile R solution, and together with the dual-boot variant they form Bittium Tough Mobile C solution. Bittium Tough Mobile C is the first smartphone based solution to have received official Confidential level encryption product classification (NSCA-FI). Bittium Tough Mobile C provides ultimate flexibility for the end-user by providing two operating system profiles (dual-OS). This means that the same device can be used in both "on duty" and "off duty" domains.

Bittium Tough Mobile R has received Restricted level encryption product classification (NSCA-FI). The security classifications mean that the solution meets either "Restricted" or "Confidential" security requirements set by the cyber security authorities for storing, transmitting and processing classified material. Security levels are defined by authorities and "Restricted" and "Confidential" are some of these classifications, "Confidential" meeting the higher level security requirements.

In addition to the high level security, Bittium Tough Mobile provides also extreme physical durability, including IP67 level water and dust protection and military-grade (MIL-STD810G) shock resistance.

Bittium Tough Mobile has a configurable HW button that can be used for example as a PTT button. Bittium Tough Mobile also supports FirstNet's LTE Band 14 for Public Safety.

Open/close section How does Bittium Tough Mobile's VPN (SafeMove Mobile VPN) differ from a normal VPN?

SafeMove is an always-on IPsec VPN. The integrated firewall and VPN policy is in place and enforced before the network interfaces are started and remains so until the device is shut down. This provides strong network security protection that add-on VPNs cannot match. The secure connection is automatically established and re-established, without any interaction from the user, thus providing seamless connectivity.

Open/close section What do "Restricted" and "Confidential" security classification levels mean?

Restricted or Confidential security classification means that the solution meets either "Restricted" or "Confidential" security requirements set by the Cyber Security authorities for storing, transmitting and processing restricted material. Security levels are defined by authorities and "Restricted" and "Confidential" are two of these classifications, "Confidential" meeting the higher level security requirements.

Open/close section What does "MIL-STD-810G" mean?

MIL-STD-810G is a US military standard that defines a broad set of environmental (like shock, vibration, temperature, humidity) requirements for mobile devices that are designed for use in harsh environments.

Open/close section What does "IP67 level protection" mean?

IP67 level protection means that the device is built to be protected from dust and can be submerged in 1 meter of water for 30 minutes and will still be operational.

Open/close section What is "PGP encrypted email"?

PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) is an encryption, decryption and signing method for data communications, like email. When an email is sent using PGP encryption, it can be read only if the receiver has the key to open the encryption.

Open/close section What kind of type approvals does Bittium Tough Mobile have?

Bittium Tough Mobile has CE, FCC, GCF and PTCRB type approvals.

Open/close section Can Bittium Tough Mobile be used in commercial networks?

Yes, Bittium Tough Mobile can be used in commercial networks.

Open/close section What languages does Bittium Tough Mobile support?

Open/close section In which country Bittium Tough Mobile is designed and manufactured?

Open/close section How does the Dual SIM function work?

Bittium Tough Mobile has a user-selectable dual SIM function. It means that the end-user can manually select from the user interface which one of the two (2) SIM cards is active.

Open/close section I'm a company IT admin. How can I manage the devices?

Bittium Secure Suite™ allows centralized, remote management of Bittium Tough Mobile. Device security and VPN policies can be managed on a server and pushed to devices. Devices can be remotely locked or wiped. Bittium Secure Suite includes server side solution that will be integrated as part of company's IT solution.

Open/close section I'm a company IT admin. Can I control the applications such as "whitelisting"?
